White Castle, LA : One person dead and another seriously injured after a two-vehicle crash in Iberville Parish on Tuesday night, March 8, 2016

One person is dead and another was seriously injured after a two-vehicle crash late Tuesday night.

The person who died was identified as Orthello Batiste, 19, of White Castle. He was a student at White Castle High School.

Louisiana State Police reported the wreck happened on LA 1 at Cpl. Herman Brown Jr. Street between Plaquemine and White Castle in Iberville Parish just before 11 p.m.

Tpr. Bryan Lee with LSP said the preliminary investigation showed Batiste was driving a 2012 Acura TL on Cpl. Herman Herman Brown Jr. just as a tow truck was headed northbound on LA 1.

Lee stated Batiste drove through the stop sign into the path of the tow truck and was hit on the driver's side. He added investigators have not determined why he didn't properly yield to traffic at the stop sign.

State Police said despite wearing his seatbelt, Batiste suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner's Office. Troopers reported a passenger in the car was not properly buckled and suffered serious injuries. The name of that person was not released.

According to Lee, the driver of the tow truck was wearing a seatbelt and had only minor injuries as a result of the wreck.

He added impairment is not suspected as a factor. As with all deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, blood samples were taken from both drivers and were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
