Victoria, TX : A one-vehicle crash that killed a 39-year-old Edna man on May, Thursday, 11th 2017
A high-speed chase early Thursday involving the Edna Police Department ended in a one-vehicle crash that killed a 39-year-old Edna man.
Two patrol officers tried to initiate a traffic stop on a silver Acura about 2:30 a.m. on Main Street in Edna when the driver turned off his headlights and sped away, said Capt. Bruce McConathy, of the Edna Police Department.
"The vehicle fled through the neighborhood with the police officers in pursuit," McConathy said. "He got out on FM 1822 heading south out of Edna. He was going well over 100 mph."
The officers lost sight of the Acura several times while driving through curves because they had to slow down, McConathy said. As the officers approached the intersection of Farm-to-Market roads 1822 and 3131, they discovered the vehicle had driven through the gate at Lavaca-Navidad River Authority headquarters.
The Acura hit the pipe holding up the large gate, heavily damaging the vehicle and killing the driver, Emmitt Harris, McConathy said.
Cyndi Poulton, Jackson County Justice of the Peace, pronounced Harris dead at the scene. He was the only occupant of the Acura.
The Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash with the assistance of the Texas Rangers.
