Sioux City, IA : 2 taken to hospital after 3-vehicle crash on Highway 75 Friday, April 7, 2017

There was a three-vehicle accident after traffic was congested at a train crossing on Highway 75 Friday.

The crash sent two people to a Sioux City hospital for moderate injuries.

The accident took place at 1:50 p.m. in the northbound lane of the highway just south of Merrill, Iowa.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper John Farley said there was a large group of cars that was stopped for the train that was crossing the tracks on the highway. Once the train had passed, the traffic started to move forward and a car behind a semi decided to change lanes and pulled in front of another vehicle. The quick change in lanes caused the vehicles to collide in the left-hand lane, he said. The first vehicle hit the trailer of the semi, and the second-- a GMC Envoy-- then rolled over once into the median.

Two people were taken to a Sioux City hospital for "moderate and non-life threatening injuries," Farley said.

Northbound traffic on the highway was restricted for more than an hour while crews tended the scene.

The incident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol, and charges are pending against the driver that caused the accident.
