Orange County, FL : Two people die in fiery motorcycle crash in Apopka on Sunday morning, Oct 4, 2015
Two women, including an off-duty Seminole County firefighter, were killed and two men were injured Sunday morning when a motorcycle and pickup truck collided and caught fire, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.
Orange County Fire Rescue crews were called to the area of Haas and Plymouth Sorrento roads in Apopka just after 11 a.m. where they found both vehicles badly damaged and on fire.
Michael Richards, 32, was the passenger inside the truck that troopers said pulled out in front of Diana Gilboy, 43, and Sarah Post, 34, who were riding together on the motorcycle.
Gilboy was a Seminole County firefighter, an agency spokeswoman said.
Richards said the motorcycle crested what he said is a blind hill and the rider appeared to be unable to slow down.
“It’s a blind hill. They came up over the hill and as soon as they slammed into the truck it was complete flames everywhere,” Richards said.
The driver of the truck, Matthew Hoyt, 38, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
A pile of motorcycle parts, almost burned beyond recognition, is all that was left of the women’s Sunday morning ride.
“It was a club that was out for a ride. We were fortunate that there were not more vehicles involved in this,” said Orange County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Mark Smothers.
The rest of the motorcycle club stood and watched. It was all they could do after driving up to find the lead bike burned to the ground.
“Just a big fireball. Just a big explosion as high as those trees,” said witness Scott Algiere.
Algiere said he wishes there was more he could have done.
And though the law favors drivers on the open road over someone pulling out of a driveway, Algiere and Richards agree the blind hill is dangerous for everyone.
“This is a bad spot. They see accidents all the time. They need more stuff out here to let people know about blind spots,” said Richards.
The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
