Windsor ,NY :Veteran killed in motorcycle crash on Friday ,July 24th 2015

A former Marine and advocate for his fellow veterans is being mourning Monday night after he was killed in a motorcycle accident over the weekend.

56-year-old Thomas Poole, of Woonsocket, was killed Friday after an accident on I-86 in Windsor, New York. He was ejected from his motorcycle after being struck by car that swerved to avoid a bear on the roadway.

Monday night, friends and family joined together to honor Poole, who they say lived to serve others.

Motorcyclists met the hearse carrying his body in Connecticut before riding with him home to Rhode Island. Dozens of flags lined the entrance of Brown Funeral Home as the large group ended their last ride with Poole.

Friends say Poole did all he could to give back to other veterans. He was a full time volunteer with “Operation Stand Down Rhode Island”, spending thousands of hours helping veterans with disabilities.

Poole served as Captain in the motorcycle group known as Patriot Guard Riders, attending funerals of military members, police, and firefighters. He also worked on the Heroes Garden memorial at the state house.

Visitation hours will be Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home in North Smithfield followed by the funeral on Friday also at Brown. Poole will be laid to rest at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.
