Fresno, CA : Driver in fatal foggy crash was drunk, now charged with vehicular homicide on Tuesday, January 31st 2017

A fatal collision that Fresno police say was alcohol-related killed a man southwest of Fresno on Tuesday morning. It was one of several crashes in the central San Joaquin Valley after heavy fog rolled into the region.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash took place about 4:40 a.m. at Jensen and Chateau Fresno avenues. Fresno police took charge of the investigation.

Lt. Joe Gomez said Jose Antonio Montano, 31, was driving a Chevrolet Avalanche pickup when he collided head-on with a Honda Accord, killing the driver.

Montano was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, felony DUI and felony DUI with a blood-alcohol level higher than 0.08 percent.

The Fresno County coroner identified the dead man as Andres Mendoza, 59, of Kerman.

There also was a collision reported at Hughes and Belmont avenues in southwest Fresno, and at Chestnut and Annadale avenues southeast of Fresno, where a big rig collided with a Toyota Camry.

In the Hanford area, a big rig and several vehicles collided at Avenue 10 1/2 and Kansas Avenue. At Highway 43 and Elder Avenue, a vehicle crashed into a ditch, according to the CHP.

Drivers who must be out in fog are urged to slow down, use only low-beam headlights and allow extra distance when following another car. If a crash occurs, drivers are urged to move as far from the roadway as possible while waiting for help.
