JANESVILLE,WI : Woman arrested after high-speed chase, crash on August, Tuesday 1st 2017
A driver who fled Janesville police at high speed Tuesday afternoon later crashed at county roads A and M in Johnstown Center and was arrested.
No injuries were immediately reported, but an officer was nearly struck as the pursuit began, according to a Janesville Police Department news release.
Masha T. Geter, 23, of 340 N. Milton-Shopiere Road, Janesville, was arrested on felony charges of fleeing an officer and reckless driving and endangering safety, along with a charge of operating after revocation, according to the release.
An officer responded to a hit-and-run incident at 1:49 p.m. at 444 Midland Road, Janesville.
The officer found Geter in a vehicle similar to the vague description of the suspect's vehicle, according to the release.
Geter denied being involved in the crash. The officer discovered Geter had a valid warrant through the Whitewater Police Department, according to the release.
The officer allowed Geter to call her mother to explain the situation. As Geter made the phone call, she started her vehicle, according to the release.
As the officer repeated "no" and struggled with Geter for the keys, she sped off. The officer's arm was nearly hooked into the steering wheel in the process. Geter swerved and almost hit the officer as she drove away.
Officers pursued Geter for 1.2 miles in the area of Racine Street and Highway 14 but broke off the chase within three minutes. Geter crashed a short time later, according to the release.
Mike Marrari of Elkhorn was driving east on County A around 3 p.m. when he saw the woman speeding and passing others recklessly. He got on his phone to the Rock County Communications Center and followed her.
“I'm surprised somebody isn't dead,” Marrari said. “She had to be doing 80 or 90 mph.”
The red Chevrolet Malibu the woman was driving hit a Chevrolet HHR at the intersection of county roads A and M. No ambulances were called to the scene.
Marrari said the woman fled on foot and entered a barn. He followed in his car, and she approached him, pounding on his window and asking to be taken to Whitewater, he said.
“I told her I couldn't because she almost killed somebody,” he said.
The Wisconsin State Patrol arrested Geter and took her to the Rock County Jail, where she remains in custody, according to the release.
