One person is dead and another was sent to the hospital with serious injuries after a two-vehicle collision in Lothian Tuesday afternoon.

Anne Arundel County police responded to the accident at approximately 3:44 p.m. The collision occurred on (Old) Southern Maryland Boulevard just south of Sands Road, police said.

An investigation showed that a Honda Civic being driven by Stephanie Michelle Musser, 18, of Lothian, was traveling northbound on (Old) Southern Maryland Boulevard, just south of Sands Road when the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and struck a Chevrolet Express van nearly head-on, police said.

Musser was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The van's driver, 57-year-old Richard Douglas Casey of Chesapeake Beach, was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center with serious injuries.

The primary cause of the accident was Musser's failure to drive right of center, police said. Police said excessive speed is believed to be a factor.

Southern Maryland Boulevard was closed because of the accident but has since reopened.
