Lowell, FL : One person killed, and two others injured in a two-vehicle crash on Northwest Gainesville Road on Saturday, December 12, 2015

One person was killed, and two others injured, in a two-vehicle crash Saturday.

The crash, which snarled traffic for most of the morning, happened at Northwest 111th Place and Northwest Gainesville Road, across the street from the Florida Women’s Reception Center and Lowell Correctional Institution.

There’s a traffic light at the intersection and troopers said they plan to interview several people to determine who had the right of way.

A woman and her granddaughter in a minivan, and a man who had been driving a car, were taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center for treatment. The man, Niven McVey, 85, died at the hospital.

According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, McVey was driving a Chrysler Concorde southbound on Northwest Gainesville Road, while a Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by Faye Herring Sadtler, 88, with her granddaughter in the passenger seat, 10-year-old Jacquelyn Baist, both of Davenport, Florida, was in the left lane, attempting to turn left into Lowell Correctional Institution.

Authorities said the minivan turned into the path of the car and both vehicles collided. Both occupants of the minivan were wearing their seat belts, troopers said. McVey, of Illinois, was not wearing his seat belt.

Sadtler was in critical condition and Baist was stable, troopers said Saturday.

Officials said the grandmother and her granddaughter were going to visit at Lowell.

Since Thanksgiving Day, six people have died in the city and county from traffic-related crashes.
