Midwest City, OK : Oklahoma City couple risked their lives on Wednesday to save a child's life after an accident on Interstate 40, August 20, 2014
An Oklahoma City couple risked their lives Wednesday to save a toddler who was ejected into oncoming traffic following a single-car accident.
An SUV containing two adults and the toddler was traveling west on Interstate 40 in Midwest City at about 12:30 p.m. when it lost control and rolled over several times before coming to rest at a concrete median. The toddler was ejected through a window, along with the child car seat he was sitting in.
"My first mindset was just to grab the baby," Tierra Deal said.
Deal and her husband, Marvin, are expecting their sixth child and told KOCO their instincts kicked as soon as they saw the crash. Marvin was driving east on I-40 when it happened and stopped his car so Tierra, who is 8-months pregnant, could run across the interstate to rescue the toddler.
"All that mattered was to get that baby out of the street," Tierra said. "Anybody could have overlooked him and, you know, hit him."
The couple stayed with the toddler until paramedics arrived.
"He was up, he was moving, we asked him did he know his name, he said 'yes' and he was just holding my neck so tight like he was so scared," Tierra said.
The toddler, and the SUV's driver and adult passenger, were transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the crash to determine the cause.
