Janesville, WI : Suspected OWI driver crashes, knocking out power near Janesville on Saturday, February 7, 2015
A Janesville man is facing drunken-driving charges after a crash in Rock County that took out a utility pole, leaving live electrical wires sparking and forcing a two-hour road closure.
About 10 p.m. Saturday, emergency crews responded to Highway 14 near S. Emerald Grove Road, about five miles east of Janesville, and found a 1999 Ford Escort on its side and live power lines hanging from a broken pole, according to the Rock County Sheriff's Office.
The driver, Kirk Israel, 23, was not injured but failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on a charge of second-offense operating while intoxicated, authorities said.
Israel had been westbound on Highway 14 when he lost control on a curve and took out the power pole. The highway was closed for two hours, and surrounding utility customers were without power even longer, as crews repaired the lines.
