PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH : Elyria man dies in single-vehicle crash in Lorain County on Tuesday, 17th April 2018

A 71-year-old Elyria man was killed Tuesday after his car went off the road and hit a tree stump, according to the State Highway Patrol's Elyria Post.

Patrol spokesman Lt. Carlos Smith says Gary Thompson was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu north on Ohio 58 between Whitney and Merriam roads when he went off the left side.

The Malibu hit a large tree stump, Smith says. Thompson was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The airbags did deploy.

No one else was in the Malibu.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the crash, which remains under investigation.
