Johnstown, PA : Victim identified in fatal crash on Route 22 on Tuesday, August 1, 2017
A trucker died early Tuesday as the result of a vehicle accident on Route 22 near Palmerton Road in Burrell Township, Indiana County.
Perry W. Bonasso, 57, of Coraopolis, Allegheny County, was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Jerry Overman Jr.
The cause and manner of death, along with toxicology test results, are pending.
A preliminary autopsy indicated Bonasso may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash, according to a release from the coroner. Bonasso was driving a tractor-trailer rig, heading west, when he struck the rear of another tractor-trailer, causing severe damage to Bonasso's vehicle, which caught fire.
The westbound lanes of the highway were closed between Jessie Penrose Road and Palmerton Road and remained closed through Tuesday.
Emergency personnel were first called at 4:49 a.m. Firefighters from Black Lick, Blairsville, Armagh and Clyde responded to the crash scene along with medical personnel from Citizens Ambulance Service and state troopers from the Indiana barracks, according to the Indiana County Emergency Management Agency.
