Portland couple injured in fiery crash on at Woodburn

A Portland man and woman were burned Monday in a rollover crash during afternoon rush hour on Interstate 5 south of Woodburn, the Oregon State Police reported.About 5:30 p.m., Fred J. Stock Jr. and Claudine Stock, both 74, were northbound on I-5 after a camping trip at Detroit Lake.A boat trailer hauled by their 1968 GMC pickup began to fishtail, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, a state police spokesman.

The truck and trailer slid sideways into the median, hit a barrier, flipped and caught fire.

Merle L. Stutzman, 59, of Hubbard and Nathaniel G. Merrill, 22, of Corvallis stopped and helped the couple escape the truck moments before it exploded.Fred Stock was rushed by ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center in Portland with serious burns.

Claudine Stock was checked by medics at the scene and cleared to leave with her daughter, who was traveling in another car. But she planned to go to Legacy Emanuel for treatment of minor burns.
