Deadly weekend on valley roads in Las Vegas Nevada
Super Bowl weekend was a deadly one on valley roads as five people were killed in five separate accidents between Friday evening and midnight Sunday.
"Many of them have been alcohol-related and certainly avoidable," said Metro Officer Marcus Martin.
Friday night off U.S. Highway 91, the driver of a Honda CRV was killed after losing control of his vehicle, which witnesses say was traveling at a high rate of speed. Saturday at Rainbow and U.S. 95, a 26-year-old male was killed when he lost control of his motorbike and hit a curb.
Sunday, three separate accidents left three dead. Just before noon, a motorcycle slammed into a van at Torrey Pines and Alexander when the driver of the motorbike tried to cut around another vehicle. Speed is being blamed for that crash. Shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday, a woman in her early 50s died when she crashed her vehicle into a drainage ditch near Clayton and Ranch House.
Meantime early Saturday morning, a 15-year-old was struck by an alleged drunk driver while standing at a bus stop at Spring Mountain and El Camino. The teen lost one of his legs and is listed in critical condition.
According to Metro, both accidents and DUI arrests are up this year compared to the year before. DUI arrests are up 20 percent this year over last.
Martin says cops will be looking to slow down the DUI arrest and fatal accident rates. He also has some advise for pedestrians: "Do not assume the motorist can see you, don't assume the motorist is paying attention and don't assume they are sober."
