Naples, FL : One dead following single-car crash in Golden Gate Estates early Friday, February 24, 2017

A Collier County man died in a single-car crash in Golden Gate Estates early Friday.

Michael James Kampe, 42, drove a 1993 Toyota Corolla westbound on 58th Avenue Northeast near Everglades Boulevard "at a high rate of speed," according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

He continued driving onto an unpaved portion of the street, and the car struck a dirt pile, went airborne and landed in a canal, according to the report. The crash was reported shortly before 4 a.m.

Witnesses and Collier County Sheriff's deputies dispatched to the scene pulled Kampe from the car and performed CPR. The man died at the scene, FHP reports.

It is unknown if the man was wearing a seat belt. FHP is investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
