Memphis, TN : A person is dead after a five car crash at Interstate-40 at Sycamore View Road On Saturday May 7th, 2016
A person is dead after a five car crash on Interstate-40 at Sycamore View Road near the flyover early Saturday morning.
The crash happened just before 5 a.m.
Police blocked off traffic all the way to the Sam Cooper Exit due to the crash.
Investigators said a Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling eastbound when it hit the rear of a Hyundai SGX, knocking it into a Ford Fusion. The Ford rear-ended a Honda Accord, which hit a Chevrolet Impala.
One woman, Francis Barrios, 23, died on the scene.
The driver of the Tahoe, Britney Herron, 25, was arrested. She is charged with vehicular homicide/reckless and financial responsibility.
The husband of a woman involved in the crash said his wife started screaming and he heard a loud bang.
“30 minutes had passed and my wife said the police are finally here,” he said.
His wife was rear-ended when she stopped for a stalled car in front of her. With nowhere to go, surrounded by traffic and construction, police said a car driven by Herron slammed into Barrio’s car.
The man said the confusing and dangerous stretch of the interstate is one more reason the city needs more officers on the streets.
“They said, ‘We're trying to get a unit out there; all our units are tied up right now,’” he said. “That lady had children. It's Heart wrenching; I think about that family.”
