Cupertino, CA : Fatal Collision with Tree on I-280 near Wolfe Road on Sunday morning, January 11, 2015

One person died and another was injured seriously when a car struck a tree at a freeway offramp early Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

The blue SUV crashed around 5:38 a.m. on southbound Interstate 280 at the Wolfe Road offramp, according to CHP Officer Eric Anderson. The passenger in the car died, and the driver was hospitalized with major injuries, Anderson said.

The far two left lanes were closed, and severe traffic alert in the area was issued by the CHP, Anderson said. Both lanes were opened again around 9:05 a.m.

No other information, including the identity of the pedestrian, was available immediately.
