Mount Airy, North Carolina
A man died after being hit by a North Carolina Highway Patrol vehicle Saturday evening in Surry County.
Officials told WXII 12 News that the incident happened shortly before 6 p.m. on Interstate 74 East, less than a mile east of Highway 89, which is near the junction with I-77.
The man hit was identified Sunday as Romie Clark Bobbitt, 78, of Landsburg, Va.
Authorities believe Bobbitt was driving a vehicle that had been side-swiped by another car.
When Bobbitt saw a trooper performing a routine traffic stop, he pulled over, got out of his vehicle and walked toward the trooper to explain what happened.
It was then that he was hit by a Highway Patrol SUV, officials said. Bobbitt died at the scene.
