Rapid City, S.D : No serious injuries in multiple vehicle crash on interstate 90 west of Rapid City on Thursday evening, March 9, 2017
No one was seriously hurt Thursday evening when icy conditions contributed to a multiple-vehicle accident on Interstate 90 west of Rapid City.
A witness at the scene said roads were slippery as another bout of winter weather moved in.
The crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. at mile marker 38, six miles east of Sturgis, in the westbound lanes of the freeway, a release from the state Department of Public Safety said.
Department spokesman Tony Mangan said a pickup truck was attempting to pull into the driving lane from the median when a 1999 Chevy Blazer, which was behind the pickup, attempted to slow down, lost control, went into the median and rolled. The 58-year-old male driver was taken by ambulance to the Sturgis hospital with minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.
A GMC pickup stopped to help. The male driver parked his truck in the median just off the interstate and got out.
A Toyota pickup driven by a female hit the ice and then hit the parked GMC pickup. Next, a Pontiac Grand Prix driven by a male collided with both the parked GMC and Toyota pickup, Mangan said in the release.
