One driver is dead after two vehicles collided Sunday afternoon in Laurens County, according to officials.

James Spires, 56, of Hinesville, Georgia died in the wreck, according to Laurens County Deputy Coroner Vickie Cheek.

At about 2:15 p.m., two vehicles were headed east on Interstate 26, about 3.3 miles east of Clinton, according to Lance Cpl. Gary Miller with the state Highway Patrol. One driver, an 18-year-old man from Mauldin, was in a 2001 Chevrolet SUV. The other was driving a 1997 Jeep Wrangler, Miller said.

The two vehicles collided, overturning the Jeep and killing the driver, Miller said. No one else was in either of the vehicles, and the driver of the Chevrolet was not injured, Miller said.

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office sent out an alert about an hour after the wreck warning drivers that the eastbound lanes of I-26 were closed at mile marker 60 because of the wreck. Drivers were detoured to state Highway 76 from Joanna to Newberry.
