COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC : Man sentenced after killing Onslow County educator in car crash on Highway 74 in Columbus County on Monday, 23rd July 2018

A man will spend 90 days in jail for his role in an accident that killed a local educator.

State Highway Patrol estimated that 30-year-old Eric Mangum of Fuquay-Varina was traveling 90 mph in a 60 mph zone in the moments before he crashed into Debra Hardin’s car on Highway 74 in Columbus County.

Hardin, 57, of Jacksonville, died when she failed to yield as she attempted to cross the highway near the intersection with Boardman Road. The accident happened at 5:20 p.m.

In a Columbus County courtroom on Monday, Mangum pleaded guilty to felony involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. In addition to the jail time, Mangum will serve 36 months probation and be required to perform community service.

Mangum will also lose his driver’s license for 4 years and is only be allowed behind the wheel to drive to work.

Hardin was the assistant principal at Meadow View Elementary School in Onslow County. She is survived by a husband of 35 years and two adult children.
