Dump truck overturns, spills gravel on northbound Interstate 15 at Scripps Poway Parkway
An overturned gravel truck snarled rush hour traffic for hours Friday on northbound Interstate 15.
Just after 2 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said the dump truck hit a guardrail near the Scripps Poway Parkway exit, flipped and spilled its load onto the roadway.
The driver initially pointed to a mechanical failure, but later admitted he was reading a map and lost control.
Three lanes were blocked off due to the incident, and authorities opened the HOV lanes to all traffic.
However, traffic on the HOV lanes was slow, with single-digit speeds most of the afternoon as traffic backed up to state Route163.
Just before 6 p.m., crews hauled away the truck and cleaned up the gravel that spilled from the truck. There was some fuel spillage, so crews put down sand to soak it up.
