Gina Whitson, 47, of Los Gatos, was killed Monday morning when the black Hyundai Sonata she was driving on Interstate 280 hit a concrete-and-steel bridge guard rail and flipped, reported California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel and the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office.
The car went over the center divide and landed on its roof between the highway's northbound and southbound lanes, according to Montiel.
Montiel said that, according to witnesses, the Hyundai, with only Whitson inside, was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed in the left-hand median before hitting the bridge rail at the Elena Road overcrossing.
The first call on the incident came to the CHP at 9:05 a.m.
Motorists stopped and pulled the woman out of the vehicle, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Montiel said.
Two lanes were closed for approximately 5 hours as officials investigated.
