Erie, PA : Buffalo woman died in a head-on crash on Route 97 in Summit Township on Monday, Nov 9, 2015

A Buffalo woman was one of two drivers who died in a head-on crash on Route 97 in Summit Township, Pa., near Erie about 8 a.m. Monday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Laura Nicholson, 39, was driving a sport utility vehicle that collided head-on with a car driven by Joseph Gausman, 54, of Erie, according to State Police Sgt. Mark Zaleski. Nicholson, who was eastbound, was attempting to pass a car when she collided with the westbound car driven by Gausman, who died instantly, Zaleski added.

Nicholson’s body was found in a pond near a trailer park not far from the crash scene, said Zaleski, who added that witnesses told police the woman left her car and walked toward the trailer park.

The Erie County (Pa.) Coroners Office said the cause of Nicholson’s death is pending toxicology tests. The crash led to the closing of local roads until about noon Monday.
