Colorado Springs, CO : A head-on crash that killed two men on May, Tuesday, 23rd 2017

A head-on crash that killed two men closed U.S. 24 for hours Tuesday morning.

Robert Hicok, 82, of Colorado Springs, died on the scene, said Trooper Nate Reid of the Colorado State Patrol. Wesley Free, 23, of Fountain, was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Reid said he didn't know whether the men were wearing seat belts.

The crash was reported about 1:43 a.m. between Peyton Highway and Elbert Road, Reid said. Hicok was driving a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire, and Free was driving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee. The Jeep, which was heading west on U.S. 24, reportedly crossed into the eastbound lane, hitting the Chrysler head-on, Reid said.

No other people were in the vehicles, and it was not immediately apparent whether impairment was a factor in the crash, Reid said.

U.S. 24 was closed in both directions until about 8 a.m., Reid said. Drivers were advised to find alternate routes to avoid delays.
