Nine students were treated for minor injuries they suffered when a school bus ran off the road in Roane County on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
The bus was traveling south on Mahoney Road near Oliver Springs about 3:45 p.m. when the right side tires dropped off the pavement as the vehicle rounded a turn, causing the bus to roll onto its side and down an embankment, according to a Tennessee Highway Patrol preliminary crash report.
Bus No. 61 was carrying 22 students from Oliver Springs High, Oliver Springs Middle and Dyllis Elementary schools, according to Roane County Director of Schools Gary Aytes.
Nine injured children were transported to Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge — two by ambulance and seven others by private vehicles, the report states. Their names have not been released.
Injuries ranged from cuts and abrasions to a possible separated shoulder, according to THP.
Initial reports indicated only three students were injured.
The bus driver, Sam W. Davis, 66, of Kingston, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
No charges or citations have been issued, the report states.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
