Athens,GA : Motorist killed in collision with 18-wheeler in east Athens on April, Friday 6th 2018
A 41-year-old Athens man was killed Friday morning when his SUV collided head-on with a tractor-trailer on Lexington Road, Athens-Clarke County police said.
The crash occurred in the area of Mimosa Drive, slightly east of the east police precinct, police said.
The wreck was reported to police at 9:54 a.m. by an off-duty Georgia State Patrol trooper, said Epifanio Rodriguez, public information officer for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. He did not say if the trooper witnessed the collision. but the trooper notified local police that the SUV’s driver was deceased.
An investigation determined that William Melendez’s’ vehicle was traveling west on Lexington Road when “for no apparent reason” it crossed over to the opposite lanes of travel and struck the 18-wheeler head-on,” Rodriguez said.
Al lanes at the crash site were closed to traffic while police conducted an investigation. The roadway was reopened more than four hours after the collision.
