Baton Rouge, LA : Man killed in hit by a vehicle on Thursday evening September 10 2015
Investigators said an elderly man was killed after getting hit by a vehicle while he was changing a tire Thursday evening.
The victim was identified as Lawrence Shepherd Jr., 80, of Baton Rouge.
Louisiana State Police reported the crash happened on Burbank Drive in the curve before Highland Road around 6:30 p.m. The roadway was completely reopened around 11:15 p.m.
According to troopers, Shepherd was trying to change a flat tire on his 1998 Toyota Sienna. He was standing near the back left side of the minivan, which was parked on the eastbound shoulder of Burbank.
Reports stated Haosheng Huang, 47, also of Baton Rouge, was headed eastbound on Burbank in a 2006 Toyota Sienna and lost control in the curve. LSP does not yet know what caused Huang to lose control.Troopers said Huang's minivan went off the road, slamming into Shepherd and his van, which were on the shoulder. The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office pronounced Shepherd dead at the scene.
LSP does not suspect impairment was a factor in the crash. Officials said a blood sample will be taken from Shepherd and sent to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis. Huang was given a chemical breath test and did not show any detectable signs of impairment.
