An accident involving a driver in a stolen vehicle during a high-speed chase on the Swinomish Reservation caused a temporary closure of Highway 20 Thursday, May 18.

Two people fled the scene of a theft in progress at the Shelter Bay Marina at a high rate of speed in a green Volvo SUV just after noon, according to a news release from Swinomish Police Chief Lou D'Amelio. Two Swinomish Indian Tribal Community police officers spotted the vehicle, which turned out to have been stolen in Kirkland, activating their lights and sirens but the vehicle fled.

The officers pursued the Volvo along Reservation Road at close to double the posted 50 mph speed limit, according to the report. The vehicle turn east onto the highway and hit a Chevy Tahoe, causing it to go off the road and crash. One of the occupants in the Tahoe was injured.

The Volvo came to rest in the highway median and the occupants fled on foot, D'Amelio said. They were quickly subdued by the officers and taken into custody without further incident. Neither occupant of the fleeing vehicle was injured and both were booked into the Skagit County Jail on a variety of charges.

The accident forced a closure of the highway. Once reopened, traffic was limited to a single lane during the investigation.
