Volusia County, FL : Two from New York killed in I-95 crash, six others seriously injured on Saturday morning, August 30, 2014
A man and woman from New York were killed and six of their family members, including two young children, seriously injured in a crash with a tractor trailer along I-95 in Volusia early Saturday morning, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The family was in a Ford Econoline van headed north on I-95 near Old Dixie Highway in Ormond Beach in the outside travel lane when the fright liner came into their lane and clipped the back of the vehicle, FHP says. The van went onto the shoulder and flipped before coming to rest on its left side.
The driver, Angel Rafael Benitez, 63, and passenger Angela Maria Benitez, a 28-year-old who was not wearing a seat belt, were killed.
The other passengers seriously inured were Mercedes Noemy Benitez, 57, Carmen Elana Benitez, 24, Camron Moody, 2, Marie Mercedes Benitez, 17, infant Olivia Theodora Moody and Ibes Benitez. All were from Westbury, N.Y., which is on Long Island.
It happened about 5:30 a.m.
The inside lane was closed for hours, causing traffic delays.
