GAINESVILLE, FL : 71-year-old volunteer dies in ATV crash on Wednesday afternoon July 9th 2014
The Florida Highway Patrol says a 71-year-old volunteer at a state preserve died when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding overturned and landed on top of him.
The incident happened Wednesday afternoon in the San Felasco Hammock State Preserve in Alchua.
Authorities say William F. Rossley routinely checked the riding trails for obstructions and debris.
Troopers say park service personnel started searching for Rossley when he didn't respond to calls on Wednesday afternoon. They found his body pinned by the four wheel vehicle around 1:26 p.m. Rescue crews pronounced him dead at the scene.
Troopers say it appears he was traveling on an uneven dirt trail when the ATV veered off the path onto a slightly raised area, causing it to overturn.
