Tallahassee, FL : FHP trooper killed in Alachua County crash on Saturday, June 17, 2017
A 30-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol died after he was struck by a vehicle on I-75 in Alachua County on Saturday.
Sgt. William T. Bishop, 52, had parked his patrol car in the inside emergency lane to investigate a crash, according to troopers. He was standing outside his car when two other cars collided, one striking him.
He was taken to Shands Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we report Sergeant William Trampass Bishop, a member of the Florida Highway Patrol, has succumbed to injuries he sustained while on duty in Alachua County this evening,” the FHP said in a statement.
A report from FHP says charges are pending.
One of the other drivers had minor injuries.
Bishop was from Lake City.
“Sergeant Bishop was a 30-year veteran FHP Trooper, who, like all troopers, put the well-being of those he serves above his own to keep Florida roadways safe. Every member at the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is grieving with Sgt. Bishop’s family during this horrific time,” said Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes and FHP Director Colonel Gene Spaulding in the joint statement.
Florida passed a "Move Over" law in 2002 requiring drivers to move over one lane or slow down to 20 mph below the speed limit when passing law enforcement, emergency workers and tow-truck drivers who are stationed on the side of the road.
