West Mifflin , PA ; Tanker truck driver trapped after his rig crashed and caught fire on Monday ,May 11th 2015

Crews worked for more than three hours to rescue a tanker truck driver who was trapped after his rig crashed, overturned and briefly caught fire near Pittsburgh.

The driver, whose name wasn't immediately released, was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital in critical condition following Monday's crash in West Mifflin.

Alvin Henderson, Allegheny County's chief of emergency services, says the tanker was loaded with 4,500 gallons of ferrous chloride, an acidic byproduct of steelmaking at the nearby U.S. Steel Irvin plant.

The truck didn't seem to be leaking, but crews expected to spend much of the day making sure of that as they lifted the truck upright to haul it away.

The crash happened about 5 a.m. The cause wasn't immediately clear.

Authorities didn't immediately release the name of the driver.
