RICE TWP, NY : One slightly hurt in school-bus crash on Interstate 81 on Thursday, August 24, 2017
One student on a school bus suffered what are believed to be minor injuries Thursday morning when the bus was involved in a crash on Interstate 81, troopers say.
The 9:50 a.m. wreck on I-81 southbound near the Nuangola exit occurred as the bus was in the left lane and a UPS tractor-trailer was in the right lane. The UPS truck driver failed to see the bus as he made an “unsafe lane change from the right lane into the left lane,” a report states.
The truck struck the bus, causing the bus driver to lose control, run off the highway’s shoulder and come to a rest after hitting a guard rail, according to troopers. The bus involved was identified by police as belonging to the Hanover Area School District. However, WNEP reported it was transporting children from the Wilkes-Barre Academy Daycare.
Police said the bus sustained disabling damage and had to be towed. There were 22 students and five adult chaperones aboard. One juvenile was taken by ambulance to a hospital, but troopers said it appeared that student was only slightly hurt.
The bus was being operated by Robert Metcalf, of Hanover Township.
The driver of the UPS truck was listed as Garfield Beamon, of New Windsor, New York.
