Kaaawa, HI : Three students with small injuries and woman was seriously injured in a head-on collision at Kamehameha Highway On Tuesday, May 24th, 2016
Police are trying to determine what caused a head-on collision Tuesday between a school bus and an SUV in Kaaawa.
Three students in the school bus were taken to the Castle Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
The driver of the SUV, in her 50s, was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Police said a negligent injury case has been opened.
The accident happened about 7 p.m., when the school bus -- carrying about 30 elementary school students, along with adult chaperones and a driver -- were returning from a field trip. The bus collided head-on with the SUV on Kamehameha Highway.
The woman who was in the SUV had to be cut out of her car by firefighters.
Kamehameha Highway was temporarily shut down on Tuesday in both directions while police investigated the accident. Roads reopened just after 9:30 p.m.
