DOVER, NH : Woman accused in fatal hit-and-run waives arraignment on Thursday, June 22, 2017
The family of a Somersworth woman who was killed in a hit-and-run thanked the community for its support Thursday as the suspect in the crash faced a judge.
Lisa Devore, 31, was arrested Wednesday, four days after Gail Burwen, 71, was killed while she was walking along High Street in Somersworth.
Devore waived arraignment on one charge of conduct after an accident. Police said the investigation is ongoing, and there could be more charges.
Police said they believe Devore was driving the car that struck and killed Burwen. The victim's relatives said they are forgiving, to a point.
"That somebody could leave my sister on the side of the road dying and just pedal to the medal and drive away, it was that part that's just hard to get beyond," said Pete Burwen, a brother of the victim.
Two of Gail Burwen's four younger brothers were at the courthouse Thursday. They expressed gratitude that the community seemed to embrace their sister, a talented artist who was described as gentle and giving.
"It gives you a little bit more feeling of peace that this person has come forward," said her brother, Ken Burwen. "There was a lot of good police work that brought it to happen. We're certainly grateful for that."
A private service will be held Friday for Gail Burwen. Some family members said they planned to return to Somersworth this weekend to meet with a man who witnessed the hit-and-run and ran to her side.
"It's just incredible to me that he was reaching out to Gail in her final moments," Ken Burwen said. "He was there with her when she breathed her last."
If Devore is released on bail, she must wear a GPS monitor and submit to random drug and alcohol tests. She was also ordered not to drive.
