Miami, FL : Toddler dies after being ejected during car crash Tuesday on August 5, 2014
A 3-year-old boy died after being ejected from a car during a collision that ended against the side of a Miami home, Tuesday.
According to police, just after 6 p.m., 19-year-old Kierra Lee was driving a black sport utility vehicle carrying 3-year-old Kayden Hart, traveling westbound on Northwest 53rd Street, when it ran a stop sign and struck a silver Cadillac heading southbound on 18th Avenue. Both vehicles tore through the chain-link fence at the intersection and into the front door of the home.
Officials said the child was ejected at the moment of impact. "I came outside; I saw the lady screaming," said witness Cheryl Plez. "Then, when I ran over there, she had a little boy, a bleeding little boy in her hands."
"It was her little brother," Plez continued. "She said, 'What should I do? Please help me. I love this little brother with all my heart. Please help me, please help me.'"
Homeowner Joe Dasent was inside the house during the time of the accident but was not injured. "I was in the house cooking, and first I heard the crash, and then I heard another boom that hit the house," he said.
Police said the Cadillac came to rest against the home and damaged an awning. They said the chain-link fence in front of the home took the brunt of the impact.
"I look out the window, and I see the car at the house," Dasent said, referring to the Cadillac. "The guy was flailing around in his seat there, and I opened the door and I was trying to tell him to keep still, you know, keep still."
Hart was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Lee was also transported after complaining of back and leg pain.
Paramedics also transported the driver of the Cadillac, later identified as 43-year-old Jeffery Brinson, to the Ryder Trauma Center. He is listed in critical condition.
Relatives described the deceased toddler as cheerful and high-spirited. "[He was] happy, playful, loved to have fun ... playing football and always smiling," said Michael Hunter, the boy's cousin. "Man, It's hard, it's hard, it's hard."
Relatives said Hart, who was a few months shy of his fourth birthday, was on his way to play at the park when the collision took place
Police have not disclosed whether the toddler was in a car seat at the time of the crash. Charges could be pending.
The investigation continues.
