New York City officials plan to debut a hit-and-run alert system in the new year.
WABC-TV reports the new system will take effect in March. According to officials, the program will function like an Amber Alert. Police say information will be sent to phones across the city in crashes that involve serious or fatal injuries.
According to the City Council, 4,000 people are critically injured in hit-and-run crashes annually.
Authorities say they are currently working on logistical issues with the new system.
