Topeka, KS : One person injured in one-car, rollover crash east of Topeka on Wednesday morning, December 21, 2016
One person was hospitalized after a one-car rollover crash Wednesday morning on a two-lane highway just east of Topeka.
The crash was reported about 7 a.m. in the 7200 block of S.E. US-40 highway, near the Shawnee-Douglas county line. The highway makes a slight curve to the northwest for westbound traffic at that location.
Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Bryce Whelpley said at the scene that a 2002 Chevrolet Impala had been traveling west on US-40 highway before it left the roadway to the left — or south.
Whelpley said the truck “overturned an unknown amount of times” as it went down a slight embankment, stopping when it struck a tree.
The car, which came to rest with its top pinned against the tree, was destroyed in the crash.
Houses in the area sit well back from the highway and weren’t in danger of being hit by the truck.
The driver, identified as Erik R. Ockree, 22, of Topeka, was reported injured in the crash and was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to a Topeka hospital. The patrol said Ockree, who was alone in the car, wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
