Monarch , CO : State transportation employee killed in multi-vehicle crash near base of Monarch Pass on Friday afternoon , May 15th 2015

Authorities say a state transportation employee was killed in a multi-vehicle crash near the base of Monarch Pass.

The Colorado State Patrol says the driver of a tractor-trailer heading east down the pass on U.S. Highway 50 caused the crash in an active construction zone Friday afternoon.

Eastbound traffic was stopped so the westbound traffic could proceed through a construction site. The tractor-trailer did not stop, and instead crossed into the westbound lane, hitting a passenger truck and a dump truck. Another vehicle was hit after the initial crash.

The driver of the dump truck, who worked for the Colorado Department of Transportation, was killed and the tractor-trailer driver was seriously injured.
