Antioch, IL : Teen killed in a head-on crash on Route 173 in village Friday morning, August 19, 2016
A 17-year-old Antioch teen died in a head-on crash on Route 173 in village Friday morning, according to Antioch police.
The crash occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on the 1000 block of West Route 173, and involved a full-sized pickup truck and a car, according to a release from the police department.
The driver of the car, a 17-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police, and his identity was being withheld early Friday afternoon pending notification of his family members.
The driver of the truck was transported by the Antioch Fire Department to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
A preliminary investigation showed that the westbound car and the eastbound truck collided head-on. The cause of the crash is still being investigated, Antioch Police Sgt. Geoff Guttschow said. The Antioch Police Department is being with the assistance by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team.
Guttschow said the pick-up truck was a full, one-ton truck, but not a commercial vehicle. He confirmed that the 17-year-old had to be fully extricated from the car by rescue personnel who cut through the roof. The truck driver required minor extrication.
Route 173 was closed in both directions for more than four hours Friday while the crash was being investigated, officials said.
