Cornelius, NC : Two people killed when their car crashes into tree, bursts into flames on Sunday, Aug 2, 2015

Authorities in Cornelius say two people are dead after their car crashed into a tree and burst into flames as the driver tried to evade police.

Local media outlets report a Cornelius police officer saw a car speeding and tried to stop it, but the driver sped away.

A statement from police said as the driver approached an intersection, it nearly hit a second Cornelius police car before speeding away. Police briefly chased the car but decided to end their pursuit.

The driver kept going but his car left the road shortly after and struck a tree about a mile from where the chase started on Sunday.

Police identified the victims as Andrew Mark Krolikowski of Huntersville and Jason Ray Monroe of Charlotte. Both men were 24.
