Seminole County, FL : Winter Springs commissioner, son injured in head-on crash on Wednesday October 21 2015
Winter Springs Commissioner Kevin Cannon is recovering Tuesday night after he and his son were hurt in a head-on crash on State Road 417 in Orange County Monday night.The Florida Highway Patrol said Porfirio Perez, 84, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of State Road 417.
Drivers who called 911 spotted Perez driving a PT Cruiser before he crashed into Cannon's car.
Do you need police, fire or medical?" an emergency dispatcher said.
Yeah, police. We have somebody out here on the 417 driving the wrong lane," the caller told the emergency dispatcher.
The Winter Springs city commissioner broke his leg. His 15-year-old son had minor injuries.
It all happened near Colonial Drive. A Seminole County deputy tried to stop the 84-year-old driver, who was ticketed and recommended for a driver's license medical re-examination.
Winter Springs city leaders are praying for Cannon to make a full recovery.
The Florida Highway Patrol said within the past year, the agency has received 196 calls about wrong-way drivers in Central Florida.
