Orlando, FL : Mother, child injured after being hit by car near South Orange Blossom Trail on Tuesday, December 22, 2015

A mother and a 3-year-old child were injured in a vehicle crash on South Orange Blossom Trail, according to Orange County Fire Rescue.

It happened near Holden Avenue and South Orange Blossom Trail, officials said.

The mother and her child were walking on the crosswalk, when three cars approached them. Two of the cars stopped, and the third vehicle drove through the intersection, striking the mother and child, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The two had just come from the grocery store, WESH 2 News has learned.

"They had just stepped out in the road," said witness Trayvon Cleveland.

"I heard a loud bang," said witness Matt Paul.

The mother was carrying her child on her arm with the groceries in her other arm.

Troopers said even though the two were walking in a pedestrian crosswalk crossing South Orange Blossom Trail near 45th Street, bright signs warning drivers of pedestrians weren't enough.

"They don't realize the car is stopping for a pedestrian and as they passed, they run right into them," Cleveland said.

According to FHP officials, two cars had stopped for the young mother and her child, but they said a black Honda traveling in the right lane kept going. The car's windshield was damaged and groceries were scattered across the street.

"The child was on the ground, laying down. Can't move. She rolled over the car," Paul said.

WESH 2 News was told the driver is cooperating with investigators. Witnesses like Cleveland said they don't feel safe crossing South Orange Blossom Trail unless it's at a light. They said the accident is one too many.

"For a lot of people, this is everyday life. Seeing people get hit," Cleveland said.

Troopers said the driver has not been ticketed yet, but that charges could be pending. Troopers are waiting to interview the victims to get their side of the story before making a decision.

The mother and child were rushed to a local hospital and are in critical but stable condition, according to FHP officials.
