Donna, TX : One dead in fiery Donna crash involving Valley Metro bus on Wednesday evening July 30th 2014
A Valley Metro bus slammed into a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon along Expressway 83, killing its passenger after the truck burst into flames, police said.
Emergency crews rushed three other people to the hospital after responding to the multi-vehicle collision near the Salinas Boulevard exit about 3:50 p.m. Wednesday.
Witnesses said the eastbound pickup truck had slowed down for another wreck when the bus rear-ended it, causing it to catch fire. The driver of the pickup truck managed to be extracted, but its passenger remained trapped inside.
South Texas College board of trustees chairwoman Rose Benavidez said the college contracts with Valley Metro for the bus service, which shuttles between its campuses in McAllen and Weslaco.
No passengers were onboard the bus at the time of the crash, Benavidez said in an email. Its driver and three other people were rushed to an area hospital for treatment with non-life threatening injuries.
Donna police continued to investigate the wreck Wednesday evening. The victim’s name was not released pending notification of his family. Traffic was diverted from the eastbound lanes on Expressway 83 as investigators worked to clear the scene.
Valley Metro spokesman Tom Logan confirmed that one of its buses was heading towards Weslaco to continue its service when it was involved in the crash.
After slamming into the truck, Logan said the bus crashed into a business sign just outside Gary’s Pool and Patio store, damaging the sign and some large outdoor merchandise.
Logan said the cause of the wreck is still under investigation and that the Valley Metro response team is in communication with police.
The bus driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital where his blood was drawn, police said. His name was not released.
Harlingen resident Abe Robledo, 30, was heading eastbound on the expressway and saw when the bus hit the pickup truck.
“I noticed the truck slow down because of the accident in front of him and then I saw the bus slam right into the back of it,” he said. “The bus just kept going, like it didn’t have brakes.”
The bus continued eastbound and veered off the expressway onto the frontage road, Robledo said. He and other people who witnessed the crash ran over to the pickup truck as soon as they noticed it was on fire.
“It was chaos,” Robledo said. “I saw at least two other guys get out of their cars and run towards the truck as other cars on the road were still driving past us.”
