Two people were seriously injured in separate accidents on Defense Highway outside Annapolis on Wednesday.
The Anne Arundel County Fire Department said firefighters were first called out to an accident on Defense Highway in the area of Windmere Court just after 9:20 a.m.
A 48-year-old woman had driven off the road and into the woods, the department said.
She was briefly trapped inside the car, the department said, but was freed by responders and taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center to be treated for possibly serious injuries. She was the only person involved in the crash, the department added.
Firefighters then responded to a second crash on Defense Highway near Lubrano Drive just after 9:40 a.m.
A 38-year-old woman was trapped inside her car after two motor vehicles collided with each other, the department said.
The woman was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center to be treated for serious injuries not considered to be life-threatening, the department said.
A 4-year-old girl also in the car was taken to the hospital, but had no apparent injuries, the department said.
No one else involved in the crash needed to be taken to the hospital for their injuries, the department said.
