A 20-year-old driver was fatally injured on Interstate 70 when her car was caught behind a vehicle that was stopped in a traffic lane and another car hit her from behind, police say

Kendall A. Douglas died at a hospital on Monday, a day after the crash, the Missouri Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened about 9:30 p.m. Sunday in an eastbound lane of I-70 west of South Fifth Street, a patrol report said.

Douglas was driving a 2006 Kia Optima that stopped behind a 2011 Kia Optima that was in the traffic lane, police said. The newer car had stopped due to an earlier crash.

A Jeep Wrangler crashed into the back of Douglas' car and pushed it into the one in front, police said.

Douglas, who lived in O'Fallon, Mo., was the only one injured. She was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead Monday. The report said she had been wearing a seatbelt.
