Two passengers died and the driver was injured when the car they were in struck a large tree at high speeds early Wednesday along Prospect Avenue in Kansas City.
The crash occurred about 4:20 a.m. in the 3300 block of Prospect. A white Chevrolet Impala was headed south on Prospect at high speeds when it went out of control, KC police said.
The car headed off the right side of the road and the right side of the car struck a large tree. It came to rest in the middle of the street.
A female and male passenger, who were seated on the right side of the car, were killed, police said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers arriving on the scene found the driver walking away from the crash. They arrested him and took him to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
No one was wearing seat belts, police said. In addition to speed as a possible cause for the crash, police were investigating whether the driver was driving while under the influence.
Police had closed Prospect for several hours while they investigated the crash. The car was place on a flatbed tow truck and carried away shortly before 7:30 a.m., allowing police to re-open Prospect to traffic.
