Three people were killed and three others injured in a crash on Highway 20 in Lincoln County on Wednesday.

At 5 p.m., Oregon State Police responded to a report of the three-vehicle head on collision on Highway 20 around mile post 31.

Troopers said a 2015 Chevy Equinox SUV and a 2005 Honda Odyssey van were both traveling westbound on Highway 20. The Honda was behind the Chevy.

For unknown reasons, a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup traveling eastbound crossed the highway’s center line and crashed head on into the Chevy.

Troopers said the Honda was unable to stop, crashing into the other two vehicles.

In the crash, the Dodge caught fire and quickly became fully engulfed in flames.

Both occupants of the Dodge were pronounced dead and the scene. Troopers did not release their names as positive identification of the pair is pending.

The driver of the Chevy, identified as 52-year-old Michael Steenkolk of Toledo, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the Chevy, identified as 48-year-old Kathleen Olive also of Toledo, was airlifted to Emanuel Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

As of Thursday morning, troopers did not know Olive’s condition.

The driver of the Honda, identified as 17-year-old Lucy Jaeger of Corvallis, and the car’s passenger, identified as 20-year-old Joseph Schmidt also of Corvallis, received minor injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to Samaritan Hospital in Newport for medical evaluation.

Troopers closed Highway 20 completely for three hours Wednesday and reopened it fully after six hours on the scene of the crash.
